When it comes to hooking up a water softener, most people want to get the job done as quickly as possible.  In this article, I will show you how you can hook up your new or old water softener, using just a few "push" connectors.  Even if plumbing is not your forté, you should be able to get this done in less than one hour.

How To: Water Softener Installation, The Easy Way

What you will need:

Pipe Cutter; Two 3/4" Male, 90°  Push Connectors; Two Flexible, 1" x 3/4" lines, 16" long; Emery Cloth or Deburring Tool

Step One

Shut Off The Water Line At The Meter or Pump

Step Two

Cut approximately 5" out of the  3/4"  cold water pipe that you want to use as the water supply.  This supply line should come directly from the meter or pump and should not serve any other appliance or outlet except for an irrigation line to the outside of the home.

Make sure your lawn does not get watered with softened water.

Step Three

Attach "Push On" (Sharkbite) Elbows, one on each end of the cold water pipe, where you previously cut out the 5" section (see diagram).  Now, if you are more than  12 inches away from the water softener you may need to add a small section of pipe from the elbow to the water softener.  Just enough to get you within 12" from the softener.   You can use copper of Pex piping whatever you desire.

Step Four

Now, attached the 3/4" x 1" flexible push on lines, from the water supply to the water softener as shown. The flex lines provide a means of joining the 3/4" water supply lines to the 1" water softener male connectors.  This can be done in a variety of ways, however, this is the fastest method that I know of for now.

Step Five

To complete the installation you will need to attach the overflow and drain tube to the water softener.  As this step is quite simple you can refer to your owner's manual to complete this section.  Keep in mind that you are required to use an indirect drain for you water softener drain installation.  See my previous article entitled "How to, Water Softener Installation the Easy Way" for more complete installation instructions.

Your comments or feedback regarding this article would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to know if I have provided enough details and if you were able to follow the instructions without too much difficulty.  Let me know how this can be improved.  Many thanks.
